The DeSantis administration is moving to expand the law known as the "Don't Say Gay Bill"
Proposal would not need legislative approval
Vote is scheduled for next month before the state board of education
Was put forward by the state education department
Both are led by DeSantis appointees
seven member board is made up of appointees from DeSantis or former Gov. Rick Scott
Originally was Kindergarten - Third Grade
Would add 4th -12th
Would ban lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity
Unless required by existing state standards or as part of reproductive health
Students can choose to not take sex ed
There is also Republican legislation that is advancing that would extend don't say gay as well
This would expand it to preK-8th
This move would go farther than the proposed legislation
Florida DoE has and governor's office have not said why the admin rule is looking to go beyond what state lawmakers have approved or are considering
