Michigan is the first state in 58 years to repeal a "right to work" law
It was originally passed over a decade ago by a Republican controlled legislature
The law had allowed those in unionized workplaces to opt out of paying dues and fees
Seen as the "free rider" problem
The repeal is seen as a major victory by organized labor
The governor also signed legislation restoring a prevailing wage law
Had been repealed in 2018
Required contractors hired for state projects to pay union-level wages
Just over half of states have a "right to work" law
