A Republican bill to overturn student loan cancellation passed the senate today (Thursday)
It is expected to be vetoed
It is unlikely that GOP would have the 2/3s required to override the veto
Vote was 52 - 46
Voted for
Joe Machin (D-WV)
Jon Tester (D-MT)
Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ)
Did not vote - have been vocally opposed
Michael Bennet (D-CO)
Mark Warner (D-VA)
Measure was approved by the house in a 218-203 vote
The legislation would:
Revoke the cancellation plan
Reduce the Education Department's ability to cancel student loans in the future
Rescind Biden's latest extension of payment pauses
Retroactively add several months of interest that was originally waived by Biden's extension
SCOTUS is currently considering the legality of the relief plan
They are set to issue a ruling by the end of June or early July
What about the filibuster?
Republicans used the congressional review act
This allows lawmakers to overturn recent regulatory actions for federal agencies by a simple majority in both chambers
Even though it was created by executive order the Government accountability office said that it is subject to the CRA in march
This is separate from the debt ceiling ending of the pause on the student loan payments and interest
