US special operations forces carried out a difficult and precarious evacuation of the US Embassy in Sudan on Sunday
Biden decided to evacuate the embassy on Friday as soon as it was safe and feasible
There has been fighting for the last nine days and there is no sign of stopping
Last week fighters attached a US embassy convoy and stormed home of the EU ambassador
The helicopters were on the ground for less than an hour
100 US troops were in three MH-47 helicopters and airlifted out about 70 remaining embassy employees from a landing zone at the embassy to an undisclosed location in Ethiopia
Ethiopia also provided overflight and refueling support according to the assistant sec of state for Africa Affairs
Biden said Djibouti and Saudi Arabia provided assistance as well
No shots fired and no major causalities were reported
US has closed it's diplomatic mission in Sudan
The final embassy employee has been removed
There are thousands US private citizens still in Sudan
Many are dual nationals
The main international airport is closed and the roads out of the country are in control of armed fighters
Biden said he is receiving regular reports from his team on efforts to assist remaining Americans in Sudan " to the extent possible"
US officials said they could not evacuate them because the danger was too high
They are however providing guidance on escape routes and other logistical information
There are an estimated 16,000 private US citizens registered with the embassy as being in Sudan
Figure is very rough because a lot of Americans do no register with the embassy and don't tell them when they depart
Many news outlets are using this number to estimate the number of Americans in Sudan
Many other countries have evacuated their diplomatic employees and some have been evacuating private citizens as well
Many other countries followed with evacuations hours after the US
The EU ambassador has stayed behind
At least 14 nations have evacuated or are evacuating at least embassy staff at this time
Some countries are also evacuating some private citizens as well
